Our Current Fight
Save the Oregon National Primate Research Center
For the last 60+ years, Oregon has been leading the nation in scientific discovery. Political figures at both the federal and state levels are seeking to close the Oregon National Primate Research Center, in Beaverton, OR. This endangers vital research on HIV, Vaccines, Alzheimer’s Disease, Endometriosis, Diabetes and other diseases. Loss of this research would not only be catastrophic to the health of Oregonians, but to global health outcomes.
This current presidential administration and its appointees at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have pressured OHSU to enter negotiations towards the closure of the ONPRC. These negotiations were initiated and entered into despite widespread scientific opposition, and without full consideration of the national scientific implications, animal welfare consequences, and economic impacts. The 180-day negotiation window is wholly insufficient for a decision of this magnitude.
Animal rights organizations who oppose all biomedical research involving animals have been aggressively spreading misinformation about the research conducted at the ONPRC, fueling anti-science politics.
Proponents of closure incorrectly claim that all the life-saving research performed at the ONPRC can be replaced by non-animal models and artificial intelligence - claims that can’t be supported by actual evidence.
We’re asking all Oregonians to USE YOUR VOICE and write decision makers and tell them to PROTECT the ONPRC.
